Tunisian customs units have seized smuggled goods worth an estimated 513 million dinars (about 154 million euros) by the end of November 2024.
Speaking at a national conference on Thursday, Chokri Jabri, spokesman for the Tunisian Customs Department, said that more than 14,400 procès-verbaux had been issued. The value of the seized illegal goods is estimated at 513 million dinars (about 154 million euros).
Customs Guard units carried out over 2,100 control operations targeting means of transport, businesses, commercial premises, markets and illegal warehouses containing goods of unknown origin or contraband.
Items seized included clothing, footwear, electronic equipment, gasoline and food.
Customs services at border posts and Customs Guard units also intercepted over 33 kilograms of cocaine, over 250 kilograms of cannabis and over 1.142 million narcotic tablets of various categories.
Smuggling in Africa is a major challenge to local economies, resulting in significant tax losses for governments. The products most affected include fuel, pharmaceuticals, textiles, cigarettes, and food, often transported across porous borders.
