The jihadist group Boko Haram has launched a nighttime attack on the Barka Tolorom military base, located in the Lake Chad province, resulting in losses within the Chadian army.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno announced the attack on his social media accounts, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers, whom he called “heroes,” and assuring them that their sacrifice “will never be in vain.”
He also offered the nation’s condolences to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to the wounded, who are currently receiving treatment.
Faced with this latest attack, the Head of State reaffirmed his resolve, declaring that “Chad remains standing, united, and unwavering” and that “obscurantism will never triumph over the Republic.”
He affirmed that the fight against Boko Haram will continue “until the total eradication of this threat.”
The Lake Chad region, bordering Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, has been a major hub for the jihadist group’s activities for several years. Chad plays an active role there within the Multinational Joint Task Force, which is engaged in the regional fight against Boko Haram.
The precise toll of the attack has not yet been officially released.
However, the wounded, evacuated to Ndjamena, were visited by the Head of State, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
