Burkina Faso has launched a major agricultural transformation initiative valued at 254.79 billion CFA francs (approximately 388 million euros) to develop 50,000 hectares of irrigated farmland by October 31, 2027.
Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo officially kicked off the works on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at a 1,000-hectare pilot site in Niaogho, located within the Nakambé region. Designed as a cornerstone of the nation’s long-term food sovereignty strategy, the initiative aims to dramatically expand Burkinabe irrigation capacity, which currently stands at fewer than 30,000 hectares nationwide.
The government-led program involves extensive land leveling and earthworks covering 60,000 hectares between November 2026 and April 2027, backed by nearly 13 billion CFA francs in heavy earthmoving allocation. The strategic push responds directly to directives issued on September 27 by President Ibrahim Traoré following erratic rainfall and severe drought pockets during the 2026 rainy season. To execute the works rapidly, the state is mobilizing machinery fleet resources from major public entities, including Faso Mêbo, SONATER, ONBAH, and the Military Engineering Corps, alongside 8,000 members of the “Volunteers for the Defence of the Agricultural Homeland,” who will receive priority allocation for the newly developed plots.
By securing year-round water management, authorities anticipate that the newly developed agricultural zones will support up to three harvest cycles annually, significantly mitigating the risks associated with climate volatility and rain-fed farming. Additionally, complementary dry-season reclamation efforts targeting 10,464 hectares are projected to yield an immediate 36,624 tonnes of agricultural produce. The government also plans to engage local Burkinabe artisans to manufacture hydromechanical equipment domestically, reinforcing industrial capacity while working alongside traditional authorities and farming cooperatives to reduce national dependence on foreign food imports.
