The Confederation of African Fotball (CAF) has put out a statement expressing condolence over the death of three football fans after the stands at a stadium collapsed in Algeria over the weekend.
Over 70 other fans were injured on the evening of Saturday, June 21, at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers during a match between MC Alger and Najem Magra, Algeria’s Ministry of Health confirmed on Sunday.
CAF expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families of the victims, the Algerian Football Federation, and the people of Algeria.
In a statement published on CAF Online, the continent’s football governing body said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and injuries among spectators during the match.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepe conveyed a heartfelt message: “CAF is profoundly saddened by the loss of lives and the injuries sustained by spectators during the match between MC Alger and Najem Magra.”
He also extended “sincere condolences to the Algerian Football Federation, the Government of Algeria, His Excellency President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and to the people of Algeria during this difficult time.”
Motsepe added: “We wish the injured a swift recovery and pray that Allah brings comfort and peace to the bereaved families and to the Algerian nation.”
CAF also announced that it would remain “in constant contact with the Algerian Football Federation and its President, Mr. Walid Sadi, and will provide any necessary support” during this difficult moment.
Following instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, an investigative commission has been set up to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy, identify any failures, and assign responsibility.
According to an official statement, the commission comprises representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Justice, Housing, and Sports, along with security services and officials from MC Alger. A report is expected soon to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The accident occurred as the stadium was packed with fans celebrating MC Alger’s ninth national championship title. A safety barrier reportedly collapsed, causing several spectators to fall from the upper stands and triggering widespread panic. The trophy presentation ceremony was subsequently canceled, leaving both sets of players and fans in mourning.
