Chad is observing three days of national mourning following the deadly Boko Haram attacks in the Lake Province.
The three-day mourning period was decreed on May 6, 2026, by Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, as tribute to the soldiers killed during the terrorist offensives carried out on May 4 and 6, 2026, around Lake Chad.
The national mourning period began on the night of Wednesday, May 6, and will continue until midnight on Saturday, May 9, 2026, across the entire Chadian territory.
During this period, flags will be flown at half-mast and all festive events suspended. Media outlets and places of worship are called upon to limit their programming to prayers and religious songs.
The measure follows a particularly violent attack attributed to Boko Haram against the military base at Barka Tolorom in Lake Chad Province. The assault left some soldiers dead and many others wounded among the Chad’s defense and security forces.
Further clashes between the Chadian army and Boko Haram fighters were also reported on May 6 in the Lake Chad region, with no official toll yet communicated.
The Chadian Head of State extended his condolences to the families of the victims and honoured the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers, vowing that their deaths would not go unanswered.
