Amid a deteriorating security situation in parts of Chad, the High Authority for Media and Audiovisual (HAMA) has issued a strong warning regarding the media’s responsibility in news reporting during times of crisis.
In a recently published statement, the Chadian media regulator expressed deep concern over the dissemination of content likely to inflame intercommunal tensions.
HAMA criticised certain national outlets for broadcasting unverified information that stigmatizes specific communities by implicating them in ongoing conflicts without judicial evidence or rigorous fact-checking.
According to the Authority, such practices represent serious breaches of journalistic ethics and pose a direct threat to national cohesion and stability.
HAMA urged media professionals to demonstrate diligence, balance, and accountability in their coverage of sensitive events, emphasizing the need to uphold human rights and safeguard peaceful coexistence.
“Journalists must master the tools required to produce responsible reporting that contributes to peace and harmonious living,” the institution stressed.
The regulator also reminded editorial managers of their obligation to oversee the quality and accuracy of content, particularly during periods of crisis, when media missteps can have serious repercussions on the social and security climate.
HAMA concluded by calling on all media actors to adhere to ethical and professional standards and to actively support the promotion of lasting peace in Chad.
