Eswatini and Japan on Tuesday signed an agreement establishing a project that will introduce renewable energy and smart‑logistics technologies at King Mswati III International Airport.
The Japan-Eswatini Green and Digital Transformation (GX-DX) Demonstration Project aims to cut high energy costs, reduce carbon‑intensive operations and modernise cargo handling through solar systems, energy‑efficient upgrades and digital coordination tools.
The Japan‑funded initiative, implemented by Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority with UNDP support, will involve the installation of solar energy systems, the upgrading of cargo facilities with energy-efficient and smart technologies, and the introduction of digital coordination tools designed to improve cargo handling and reduce delays.
According to the Eswatini government, the project is expected to boost operational efficiency, strengthen trade facilitation and enhance Eswatini’s regional competitiveness.
Public Works and Transport Minister Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe described the signing as
a major step towards a greener, more resilient and technologically advanced aviation sector.
