Regional security and stability across the Middle East and Africa took centre stage during a meeting on Tuesday in Cairo between Egypt’s Minister of Defense and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State.
General Abdel Mageed Saqr, Egypt’s Minister of Defense, received U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and an accompanying official delegation at the Ministry’s General Secretariat headquarters, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.
The talks focused on several issues of mutual interest on both regional and international levels, evaluating their broader implications for regional security. The talks specifically addressed ongoing developments in the Middle East and Africa, amid a climate defined by persistent flashpoints and transnational security challenges.
During the meeting, General Saqr reviewed the current state of military cooperation and the defense partnership between Egypt and the United States. He welcomed the expanding horizons of bilateral cooperation, particularly in military operations and training, underscoring both nations’ commitment to strengthening exchanges in pursuit of shared interests.
Christopher Landau highlighted Egypt’s “influential and active role” on the regional and international stages.
He praised Cairo’s efforts to bolster security and stability throughout the Middle East and Africa, the statement added. This recognition aligns with the ongoing regular consultations between the two countries regarding strategic and security affairs.
The meeting was attended by General Ahmed Khalifa, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, as well as the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and several high-ranking military officials.
The visit is part of a broader framework of bilateral exchanges aimed at coordinating policy positions and deepening the strategic partnership between Cairo and Washington on defense and regional security issues.
