The Guinean government is advancing two major urban modernization initiatives designed to restructure informal settlements and expand affordable housing options across Conakry.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah met with officials from the Ministry of Urban Planning, Housing and Territorial Development to evaluate implementation plans for the PHENIX “Zero Slums” project in Coronthie and a 1,710-unit social housing development in Sonfonia. Both initiatives are managed through state development agencies alongside private partner 54 RED, following the completion of initial architectural and structural design phases.
The dual projects address severe urban expansion pressures in the capital, where rapid population growth, rising land values, and elevated rental costs have constrained access to quality housing. The Coronthie redevelopment focuses on transforming informal housing networks into structured residential zones equipped with essential public utilities, while the Sonfonia development expands existing state housing programs that delivered 280 units earlier this year. Both projects operate as core components of President Mamadi Doumbouya’s long-term “Simandou 2040” framework, which directs state and private capital into national infrastructure, energy, and municipal development.
Prime Minister Bah instructed project leads and urban development authorities to expedite field execution to ensure timely delivery of usable housing assets. Government planners view the urban renewal efforts as essential steps toward improving public sanitation, easing municipal traffic bottlenecks, and modernizing land governance across the Conakry peninsula.
