Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed the recent ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, describing it as a vital step toward peace in the Middle East and globally.
Speaking during a state banquet in Lusaka on Monday night in honour of visiting Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Hichilema praised the agreement as a “moment of hope” and thanked US President Donald Trump for facilitating the negotiations.
“The people of Zambia and the African continent have prayed for this moment,” Hichilema said, expressing condolences to families affected by the conflict.
He noted the importance of securing peace not only in the Middle East but across all regions facing instability.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, follows years of intense fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction, including thousands of civilians.
The truce includes provisions for the release of hostages and increased humanitarian access to Gaza.
President Herzog said Israel had long sought a peaceful resolution and welcomed the breakthrough as a step toward lasting stability.
The visit also marked a milestone in Zambia-Israel relations, coming just months after the reopening of the Israeli Embassy in Lusaka in August 2025 – its first presence in the country in over five decades.
Hichilema hailed the visit as a “renewed chapter” in bilateral cooperation, building on the 2023 General Framework Agreement of Cooperation between the two nations.
During bilateral talks at State House, Hichilema outlined Zambia’s priorities in agriculture, health, education and technology, noting that Israeli expertise – particularly in irrigation and water management – would be instrumental in addressing the country’s climate challenges and boosting food security.
He also highlighted ongoing collaborations in health, including specialised surgeries by Israeli doctors and training opportunities for Zambian students.
Herzog encouraged Israeli businesses to invest in Zambia, citing its favourable investment climate and strategic potential.
He also welcomed Hichilema’s invitation for more Israeli tourists to explore Zambia’s natural attractions.
