The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has launched a nationwide voter verification exercise to ensure the accuracy of the voters’ roll ahead of general elections set for 16 September.
Speaking at the launch event in Lilongwe, MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja urged political parties to conduct responsible audits and cautioned against the spread of unverified claims on social media.
“Disinformation is a growing threat to electoral integrity globally, and Malawi is not immune,” Mtalimanja said.
She called on political leaders to protect voter data in line with privacy laws and to educate their supporters on identifying and rejecting fake news.
The MEC chief encouraged eligible voters to confirm their names, photos and other details at the electoral body’s designated registration centres across the country.
