Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari was on Tuesday buried in his private residence in Daura in northern Katsina State.and witnessed by a select gathering of family members, close associates and Islamic clerics.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu had earlier at the Katsina Airport received the body of his predecessor after it was flown from London, the United Kingdom, where he died at a London Clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025
Hundreds of mourners, including governors, military chiefs and heads of states from neighboring countries witnessed the solemn moment as the body of the 82-year-old General was lowered into the earth with 21-gun salute for the former Nigerian president.
Some of the dignitaries, who attended the burial ceremony included Vice President Kashim Shettima; Buhari’s former deputy, Yemi Osinbajo; former vice president Atiku Abubakar; billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote; serving and former governors, ministers, first-class traditional rulers, religious leaders, among others..
Born on December 17, 1942, Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985. After his retirement from military service, he joined politics and was elected as Nigeria’s democratically elected President in May 2015, a position he held for eight until May 2023.
The Nigerian government had declared Tuesday as public holiday in honour of the late former President Buhari with flags at half-mast for a week.
