President Adama Barrow, and Essa Faal Sunday in Banjul signed an agreement which seals a political alliance ahead of December’s presidential election.
Faal, a former lead counsel of Gambia’s truth commission who heads the All People’s Party (APP-Sobeyaa) was welcomed to State House by President Barrow shortly before the two emerged holding hands and greeting cheering supporters.
The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
As his agreement with the ruling National People’s Party was confirmed last week, Mr Faal faced stiff opposition from his own party whose some of whose officials threatened to walk away.
In 2021 Faal was among several of Mr. Barrow’s challengers for the presidency.
President Barrow is bidding for a controversial third term and will face former ally turned foe Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party who came second in the polls five years ago.
The NPP had pulled off a propaganda coup last month after Mamma Kandeh, of The Gambia Democratic Congress signed a similar alliance with the NPP.
