APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – Rwandan President Paul Kagame and commander in chief of the Rwandan Army has fired the two senior officers including the former head of external intelligence over misconduct, according to a military statement seen by APA Wednesday.
Among those dismissed from service include Maj Gen Aloys Muganga, the commander of the mechanised division and Brig Gen Francis Mutiganda, the former Director General of External Security at the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) until October 2018 when he was recalled to the army.
“His Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda has also authorized the dismissal of 116 other ranks and approved the rescission of service contracts of 112 other ranks. The dismissals and rescission of service contracts take immediate effect,” read part of the statement issued by the Rwandan military.
They were dismissed along with 14 other officers from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF).
The dismissal of the two generals came a day after Kagame made a major shakeup in the military leadership.
Earlier Tuesday, President Kagame appointed Juvenal Marizamunda, another senior officer who was until recently commander of the Rwanda Correction Services (RCS),as new defense minister.
Other changes included the elevation of Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi to Infantenry Army Chief of Staff, replacing Muganga. Nyakarundi was the head of Defence Intelligence in the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF), a position that will be occupied by Col François-Régis Gatarayiha in an interim capacity.
Kagame also named Maj Gen Alex Kagame as the Joint Taskforce Commander in Mozambique, where he will replace Maj Gen. Eugène Nkubito who has been deployed there since August last year.
