Austria confirmed on Wednesday its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to resolve the Western Sahara dispute, describing it as a “feasible” solution within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
According to a joint statement issued in Vienna, Austria’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan was reaffirmed, following a meeting between Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who was on a working visit to the Austrian capital.
Following up on the UN Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted on October 31, 2025, Vienna expressed its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to revive the political process.
The statement emphasizes that these negotiations must be based on the Moroccan autonomy initiative in order to reach a “just, lasting, and
mutually acceptable” solution.
In this context, the Austrian authorities also welcomed Morocco’s efforts to clarify the specific modalities for implementing autonomy under national sovereignty.
The statement noted that this approach is presented as a clarifying element likely to facilitate UN discussions.
This European stance reflects a broader trend observed in several capitals, where the autonomy plan is gaining diplomatic recognition.
Rabat highlights this trend as the result of an active diplomatic strategy, pursued at the highest levels of government, aimed at
consolidating international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
Beyond the political dimension, this type of support helps to raisethe profile of the issue on the international stage and to structure
the diplomatic balance around initiatives supported by the United Nations, in a context where the search for a compromise remains
central to the discussions.
