Speaking on Tuesday at the opening day of the 49th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Senegalese Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad Cheikh Niang called for an urgent mobilization of both domestic and international resources to support development across Africa.
Addressing delegates and foreign ministers from member states, Senegal’s top diplomat stressed the vital need for financing mechanisms tailored directly to the continent’s social and economic goals.
The call from Dakar comes as African nations face substantial investment needs across key sectors including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Running through July 29, the Executive Council session serves as a platform for foreign ministers to assess progress on Agenda 2063, evaluate regional integration initiatives, and align on the 2026 theme focused on water availability and sanitation. Through Minister Niang’s intervention, Senegal reaffirmed its commitment to guiding AU policy toward economic sovereignty, regional solidarity, and sustainable development.
