A diphtheria outbreak has killed 14 people in Senegal, where 368 cases have been confirmed in 60 health districts across 13 regions, according to a Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene update as of October 18, 2026, which reports two new deaths since the previous statement.
Dakar region recorded 53 cases, followed by Kaolack (48), Diourbel (44), Louga (42), Kédougou (35) and Thiès (33), according to data published by health authorities on Monday, October 19. Tambacounda has reported 26 cases, while Matam has 29.
The other affected regions are Kaffrine and Fatick, with eight cases each, Kolda (13), Ziguinchor (14) and Saint-Louis (15). The statement also reports cases in several health districts within these regions.
With the disease spreading, the ministry reminded the public that diphtheria is a contagious infection that can be prevented by vaccination.
Symptoms can include a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, a swollen neck or the formation of grayish membranes in the throat, sometimes accompanied by breathing difficulties.
Health authorities urged parents to check their children’s vaccination status and follow the schedule of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), making sure any missed doses are completed.
The ministry also advised people to go to the nearest health facility without delay at the first sign of symptoms and warned against self-medication.
For more information, the public can call the toll-free number 800 00 50 50, 1919, or the emergency medical service SAMU on 1515.
