Power supply disruptions across Senegal are expected to ease beginning Thursday, September 24, following major technical incidents at key generation facilities, according to Senelec Director-General Papa Toby Gaye.
Speaking on national broadcaster RTS, Gaye explained that the recent load shedding resulted from a combination of unexpected plant shutdowns and record high electricity demand, which surged past forecasts to reach 1,400 megawatts in August.
System capacity was severely constrained by a turbine failure at the Cap des Biches facility and the sudden loss of approximately 200 megawatts from the Karpowership floating power station. Senelec confirmed that replacement parts for the Karpowership facility have arrived in Dakar, allowing technical teams to commence repairs and prepare for a progressive restoration of grid stability, alongside scheduled maintenance operations designed to reinforce the country’s long-term energy infrastructure.
