Senegal’s National Gendarmerie’s Environmental Section Sunday intercepted a canoe carrying
approximately six metric tonnes of contraband chicken thighs off the coast of Dakar.
They were impounded near Sarpan Islet following a tip-off revealing a boat traveling from The
Gambia to Thiaroye.
A patrol led by members of the Environmental Section successfully intercepted the pirogue.
On board, gendarmes discovered 1,800 cartons of chicken thighs, representing a total estimated weight of six metric tonnes and a market value of 25 million CFA francs.
Nineteen Senegalese nationals were also on board the vessel at the time of the interception.
The investigation is ongoing to shed light on this latest attempt to smuggle foodstuffs into the country.
