The South African government has issued an urgent warning of a nationwide winter storm, urging residents to prepare for extreme weather conditions that could disrupt transport, damage infrastructure and pose risks to vulnerable communities.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a cut-off low pressure system affecting all provinces except Limpopo, bringing widespread snowfall, heavy rainfall, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa noted the serious risks posed by the storm, particularly in rural and mountainous areas.
“I urge all South Africans to stay informed, heed official warnings, and take the necessary precautions to protect lives and property,” he said.
Authorities warn that snowfall could disrupt major transport routes while heavy rain and flooding threaten parts of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces from Sunday.
Strong winds and hazardous sea conditions are expected to impact coastal areas until Tuesday.
In addition, severe thunderstorms are forecasted for Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and KwaZulu-Natal in the new week, which may include hail and damaging winds.
Lastly, very cold temperatures are predicted, with daytime highs dropping below 10°C in many areas.
The government has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, monitor updates from SAWS, prepare emergency supplies and support vulnerable individuals, and stay away from flooded areas and avoid crossing rivers or low-lying bridges.
