The body of a 10th woman has been found in South Africa’s Gauteng province, adding to fears that a serial killer is on the sprawl in the country’s richest regions.
Deputy police chief Tebello Mosikili said on Monday that the body of an unidentified woman, believed to be in her 20s, was discovered in a dam in Johannesburg’s Soweto suburb at the weekend.
The police are trying to establish if the latest incident was linked to the previous cases. The body was found wrapped in a duvet.
The discovery comes in the wake of a series of unresolved murders of women in Gauteng province that have raised concerns that a serial killer could be operating in the area.
Bodies of nine other women were found between 15 July and 17 September in areas including Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein, Kwa-Thema and Dawn Park.
The ninth victim, Jabulile Ntimba, was found in Dawn Park on 17 September and the police have arrested two women and a man in connection with her killing.
A multidisciplinary team of detectives, forensic experts and criminal profilers has been assigned to the cases.
