The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has dismissed allegations that they have supported the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival (AFS), a new coalition currently fighting the federal government.
This response follows statements made by the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force.
In a statement seen by APA on Monday, the General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces said the accusation comes at a time when there is confirmed information and evidence of ongoing support and backing for the “Al-Dagalo” terrorist militia from within Ethiopian territory.
This includes training and supply operations, as well as the use of Ethiopian territory to conduct military activities using strategic and suicide drones.
Ethiopian National Defense Force Chief of General Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula had earlier accused Sudan, Egypt and other actors of supporting groups opposed to the Ethiopian government.
He said external actors were backing an alliance of armed and political groups, arguing that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Eritrea would pose a more limited threat without outside support.
His remarks came amid renewed tensions in northern Ethiopia, where clashes have intensified between federal forces and the TPLF and allied groups.
The statement emphasised Sudan’s full commitment to international law, the principles of good neighborliness, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations, while simultaneously asserting that it will not tolerate any infringement upon its sovereignty or national security.
The accusations also come amid renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia, following the formation of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Coalition for Survival, which brings together seven armed and political groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Oromo Liberation Army and Amhara Fano National Movement. The coalition has said it seeks to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.
