One person was killed when alleged terrorists struck Mozambique’s Niassa province last week, APA learnt here on Monday.
Niassa provincial Secretary of State Silva Livone said Islamic State-aligned insurgents hit the Marangira administrative post in Marrupa district last Thursday, killing a woman, wounding a member of Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) and torching a tourist lodge and other infrastructure inside the Mozambique Wild Adventures hunting concession.
Livone said the injured FDS member was receiving medical care and was out of danger.
He added that insurgents looted and burned the Mozambique Wild Adventures camp, stole vehicles and set fire to residences, a health centre and a police station.
Reports also indicated abductions of an undetermined number of citizens while about 2,700 people were displaced during the raid.
Livone said the attackers came from neighbouring Cabo Delgado province where an Islamist insurgency has raged since 2017, targeting communities in the gas‑rich north.
He noted that incursions into Niassa were aimed at reinforcing insurgent logistics.
The official urged the FDS to intensify operations to protect local communities and called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.
This marks the second major terrorist attack in Niassa province. In June 2025, insurgents destroyed facilities at the Kambako hunting ground in the Niassa Special Reserve, taking hostages during the raid.
Mozambique’s northern provinces have faced escalating violence since 2017 when armed groups linked to the Islamic State began attacking villages in Cabo Delgado.
The conflict has displaced more than a million people and disrupted development in one of the country’s most resource‑rich regions.
