Tunisia has warmly welcomed the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s obligations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, calling the ruling a “historic step” in the legal recognition of Palestinian rights.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tunisia asserted that the ICJ’s opinion confirms the “illegitimacy of the presence of the occupying Zionist entity” and its “total absence of any sovereign right” over the Palestinian territories. Tunisia noted its active participation in the advisory procedure, having submitted a written memorandum and presented oral arguments supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
The ICJ opinion places several crucial obligations on the occupying entity, specifically demanding that it: Allow the presence and activities of the UN, international organizations, and third states in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid and provide essential health services in Gaza and throughout the Palestinian territories. Facilitate international relief operations, particularly those of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Prohibit forced displacement and expulsions, and prevent the use of starvation as a weapon of war.
Tunisia believes these obligations highlight the flagrant violations committed by the occupying entity against international humanitarian law, human rights law, and the UN Charter.
The Ministry strongly urged all UN Member States to exert pressure on the usurper to comply with the ICJ’s opinion and to work toward the adoption of a binding UN resolution to ensure its effective implementation.
