Burundian President and current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Évariste Ndayishimiye, on Monday received Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for high-level talks aimed at aligning positions on the continent’s key challenges and strengthening coordination within the AU in addressing current issues.
The meeting took place ahead of a virtual high-level summit convened by the AU Chairperson to assess the resurgence of Ebola outbreaks in several parts of Africa. Scheduled for 16 June 2026 at the Ntare Rushatsi Palace in Gitega, this upcoming summit will bring together African heads of state and government, along with the continent’s key development partners, to enhance the coordination of prevention, response, and solidarity efforts.
During their discussions, the two leaders reviewed the major challenges facing Africa and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation among AU institutions in order to deliver effective responses to the concerns of African citizens. Their talks focused in particular on the implementation of the AU’s Agenda 2063, accelerating regional and continental integration, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing the economic resilience of African states amid mounting global challenges.
Peace, security, and stability across the continent also featured prominently in the discussions, with both officials underscoring the absolute need to sustain efforts aimed at conflict prevention, combating terrorism and violent extremism, and strengthening African-led mediation and peacebuilding mechanisms. In light of the humanitarian and public health crises currently affecting several regions of the continent, the AU Chairperson and the head of the AU Commission reiterated their commitment to promoting collective action grounded in solidarity, prevention, and stronger emergency response capacities.
The meeting ultimately highlighted the strong convergence of views between the AU Chairpersonship and the African Union Commission on the continent’s strategic priorities. It also reflected their shared determination to advance a united, peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Africa, in strict line with the aspirations of African peoples and the core objectives of Agenda 2063. These talks form a vital part of ongoing consultations between AU institutions aimed at strengthening the continent’s leadership and advancing African solutions to African challenges.
