Ethiopia’s air force on Monday carried out another round of strikes on positions held by the Tigray Defence Force (TDF) as tensions escalate in the country’s north.
Witnesses told APA on Monday that the latest strike occurred in the morning in the Shererina area of Tigray, killing one TDF fighter after what they described as an off‑target hit.
The attack was the second drone strike in the region in less than three days.
On Saturday, a TDF position in Sheraro district, about six kilometres from the Eritrean border, was struck in an assault that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said caused significant casualties. TDF is the armed wing of the TPLF.
The drone used in the Sheraro strike was reported to have originated from Sudan’s Blue Nile Region, an area where Khartoum’s Rapid Support Forces operates from although independent verification remains limited.
Colonel Fesseha Berhe, a former TPLF commander, told local media that the number of casualties from Saturday’s attack was “serious,” but said figures could not be released for military reasons.
Regional sources reported that five TDF trucks were destroyed, along with several vehicles carrying artillery ammunition and other weapons.
The renewed strikes come days after the TPLF warned that a “devastating war” was imminent and would have consequences for the wider region.
The warning, coupled with the uptick in drone activity, has heightened concerns about a potential escalation in the fragile security situation in northern Ethiopia.
