U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a message to King Mohammed VI reaffirming Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara and reiterating support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only credible framework for resolving the dispute.
In an official message marking the 26th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, President Trump reiterated that “the United States of America recognises Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara” and that the autonomy proposal put forward by the kingdom remains “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a lasting solution.
The statement is in line with the U.S. recognition formalised in December 2020 under Trump’s first administration.
His close allies and envoys, including Richard Duke Buchan and Massad Boulos, have repeatedly reaffirmed this stance in recent months. The message further reinforces the diplomatic trajectory Washington has taken in support of Morocco’s autonomy initiative under the UN-led political process.
Trump also extended congratulations to the sovereign and the Moroccan people, highlighting the enduring strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington. He emphasised that the United States “greatly values” this bilateral relationship, grounded in shared interests in peace, counterterrorism, and economic cooperation. He also pointed to the Abraham Accords as a source of regional stability and opportunity.
The American president concluded by expressing his intent to further strengthen U.S.-Morocco cooperation with the shared aim of promoting peace and security in the region. His message comes amid ongoing tensions over the Western Sahara issue in various international forums, where Morocco continues to enjoy consistent support from the United States on the multilateral stage.
