Ugandan Military Chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba has pledged to back Israel amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Kainerugaba writing on X Thursday said that Uganda wants the war in the Middle East to end but would join the conflict on the side of Israel if Jerusalem were at risk of defeat.
Last month, Kainerugaba had also announced that Uganda would erect a statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, the brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, who was killed while leading an elite Israeli force during the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue operation in Uganda.
His latest remarks have drawn attention as tensions in the Middle East continue, with several countries calling for an end to the conflict while reaffirming support for their allies.
“We want the war in the Middle East to end now. The world is tired of it. But any talk of destroying or defeating Israel will bring us into the war on the side of Israel,” Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chief of defense forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, said on the US social media company X.
In another deleted post, he claimed that Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF), the country’s armed forces, will begin participating in the war “on the side of Israel” if it doesn’t end soon.
“Israel has a right to exist and attacks against her must stop,” he stated.
The conflict has intensified since late February, with large-scale casualties reported and continued exchanges of drone and missile strikes involving Israel and Iran, as well as impacts across neighbouring countries.
