The Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced the Kingdom of Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term.
In his address on behalf of Morocco during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Bourita emphasized that Morocco’s bid for a non-permanent Security Council seat reflects the Kingdom’s “firm determination” to contribute effectively and responsibly to the maintenance of international peace and security.
He presented the candidacy as being grounded in a “realistic and solidarity-based” vision of international cooperation, in strict adherence to the rules of international law and the principles of national sovereignty and the territorial integrity of states.
The Moroccan official explained that the candidacy draws on the diplomatic achievements the Kingdom has amassed over the centuries and the vision of King Mohammed VI, which aims to cement Morocco’s position as a key, reliable player in promoting stability and achieving sustainable development worldwide.
He added that this initiative would enable the Kingdom to continue pursuing its “noble mission” of advancing the cause of peace, strengthening the pillars of collective security, and resolutely championing multilateral action, in full alignment with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
For Bourita, Morocco’s candidacy represents the “culmination” of the Kingdom’s tangible and ongoing contributions to consolidating the three pillars underpinning the international system: the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development, and the upholding of the rule of law.
