The African Union Commission has appointed former Tanzanian president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete as High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, a region at the heart of major political and security tensions.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the AU Commission said Kikwete will support the organisation’s efforts in a region marked by complex political and security dynamics.
His mandate will include preventive diplomacy, facilitating inclusive political dialogue, building trust among stakeholders, and strengthening regional cooperation mechanisms.
The High Representative will work in coordination with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the East African Community, the League of Arab States and the United Nations to ensure coherence in collective efforts aimed at promoting regional stability.
The AU Commission highlighted the strategic importance of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea for international trade and the stability of the continent, underscoring the need for coordinated engagement at this level.
