Botswana and China signed 11 cooperation agreements during President Duma Boko’s state visit to China last week, upgrading bilateral relations and expanding collaboration in education, healthcare, trade, investment and industrial development.
The agreements were concluded during Boko’s visit to China from 12 to 17 October, during which the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, the Botswana government said on Thursday.
The cooperation instruments cover a range of sectors, including health, green mining, human resources development, security and media cooperation.
Among the commitments secured during the visit is a 400 million pula (about US$28.6 million) grant from China to support education and skills development in Botswana as well as about 40 million pula worth of medical equipment and healthcare consumables.
The agreements are expected to support Botswana’s economic diversification agenda by strengthening investment, improving skills development and expanding opportunities for industrial growth and job creation.
The latest commitments mark a further deepening of ties between Gaborone and Beijing whose relationship has grown steadily since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975.
China has become one of Botswana’s major development and trading partners, financing and supporting projects in infrastructure, healthcare, education and other sectors.
Chinese companies have also expanded their presence in Botswana through investments in construction, manufacturing, mining services and telecommunications.
For Botswana, closer engagement with China forms part of broader efforts to attract investment, diversify the economy beyond diamonds and develop productive sectors capable of creating employment and increasing exports.
The elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership signals a higher level of political and economic engagement between the two countries and provides a framework for deeper cooperation across multiple sectors.
