Burkina Faso has secured a financing agreement worth $120 million, or over 67 billion CFA francs, from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) to boost adaptive social protection and drive economic empowerment for low-income populations.
Formally signed on July 14, 2026, and officially approved for ratification by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the funding package combines loans and grants to underwrite a comprehensive five-year national resilience initiative.
Titled the Project for the Economic Empowerment of Poor and Vulnerable Households for Resilience and Adaptive Social Protection (PARPS), the nationwide program focuses on scaling up rural livelihoods, local industrial processing, and agricultural infrastructure. Key operational targets include organizing 120,000 households into 4,800 community cooperatives, creating 1,200 local economic units, and constructing extensive crop storage networks featuring six 5,000-tonne regional warehouses, two modern logistics depots, and twenty 1,000-tonne storage facilities. Priority implementation will center on the Koulsé, Yaadga, Nakambé, Nando, Bankui, and Sourou regions in alignment with the progressive deployment of the national Single Social Registry to optimize poverty targeting and shock response capabilities across the country.
