The thirteen newly appointed members of Burundi’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) officially took their oath of office on Monday, October 26, 2026, before President Évariste Ndayishimiye at a formal ceremony in Bujumbura.
Attended by members of parliament, cabinet ministers, and representatives of the accredited diplomatic corps, the high-level proceedings marked a pivotal step in the East African nation’s ongoing institutional efforts toward historical transitional justice.
During the swearing-in ceremony, the commissioners solemnly pledged to discharge their mandate with strict impartiality, independence, and confidentiality in their pursuit of national healing. The TRC is tasked with investigating, documenting, and establishing the objective truth surrounding historical conflicts and human rights abuses that have impacted Burundi, with the overarching objective of fostering sustainable inter-communal dialogue, accountability, and long-term national reconciliation.
