Chad is calling for the rapid restoration of peace in Sudan, describing it as an imperative for the stability and security of the entire region.
The appeal was made during the sixth consultative meeting in Geneva on the coordination of
peace initiatives for the country.
Chad’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva, led by Ambassador and Permanent Representative Ahmad Makaila, participated in the meeting held at the Palais des Nations. It was organised jointly by the Swiss Confederation and the Office of the Personal
Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan.
The meeting aimed to strengthen the coordination of diplomatic efforts and foster convergence among initiatives seeking a peaceful and lasting solution to the Sudanese conflict.
It brought together states involved in key peace initiatives, neighbouring countries and relevant
regional actors, permanent members of the UN Security Council, and several regional and international organizations – including the African Union, the European Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the League of Arab States, and the United Nations.
Welcoming the initiative, Ambassador Ahmad Makaila reaffirmed Ndjamena’s commitment to peace in Sudan and, by extension, to regional stability.
He urged the parties to the conflict to prioritize dialogue and to engage resolutely in a negotiated, inclusive political solution led by the Sudanese people themselves. He also emphasised the need to
respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.
Highlighting the direct impact of the crisis on his own country – most notably the massive influx of refugees – the Chadian diplomat underscored the urgent need to bolster international assistance for both Sudanese refugees and their host communities.
Furthermore, he advocated for better coordination between peace initiatives led by the UN and those of regional and international organizations – specifically by aligning the approaches of the Quintet and the Quad – in order to achieve more coherent and complementary diplomatic action.
Finally, Chad called on the international community to continue its efforts toward reaching a lasting political settlement, noting that the restoration of peace in Sudan is not only a humanitarian priority but also an imperative for the security of the entire region.
