Chile has officially reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, including Western Sahara, during high-level bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Following discussions between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, attended by Chilean President José Antonio Kast, the two nations issued a joint communiqué backing Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal as the definitive political solution to the regional dispute.
To solidify this diplomatic stance, Chile announced plans to expand economic, trade, and productive investment ties within the region. The communiqué formally endorsed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, calling on all involved parties to re-engage in negotiations without preconditions on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy plan. Bilateral relations were further deepened during the meeting as both foreign ministers signed the terms of reference to initiate formal negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement.
