Four days after officially announcing his departure for a private holiday in Greece, the first such announcement in the communication history of Guinea’s presidency, President Mamadi Doumbouya on Thursday reaffirmed that his commitment to serving Guinea remained unwavering, as he shared images of a moment of relaxation at sea with his wife.
Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya said on Thursday that his commitment to Guinea remained unchanged despite taking a brief break at sea with his wife, continuing the communication effort launched since his officially announced private holiday departure on Monday.
In a message published through his official channels, the Guinean head of state referred to “a brief moment of respite, surrounded by my loved ones”, while stressing that the country’s institutions continued to operate normally.
“Guinea is moving forward, its institutions are functioning and nothing can distract us from our determination to lead the nation towards the objectives we have set together for the well-being of our people,” Mamadi Doumbouya said.
The statement follows directly from a communiqué issued by the Guinean presidency on August 3 announcing the president’s departure for a private family stay of several days in the Hellenic Republic (Greece). The trip was described as unprecedented in the country’s recent political history, with authorities stressing that it was the first official announcement of an annual holiday by a Guinean president, in the name of institutional transparency.
At his departure from Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport in Conakry, Mamadi Doumbouya was seen off by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, senior presidential officials, representatives of republican institutions, the armed forces and the diplomatic corps.
A few hours later, the General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement expressing its “constant fidelity and unwavering loyalty” to the President of the Republic, the institutions of the Republic and the Guinean people, while urging citizens not to fall for misinformation and to remain calm.
Thursday’s message appears to be a response to questions raised by the temporary absence of the head of state. By stating that “I remain, wherever I may be, exclusively at the service of our country and its people,” the Guinean President sought to emphasise the continuity of his leadership and reassure the public about the continuation of major projects undertaken as part of the country’s transition and development agenda.
Accompanied by his wife during the sea outing, Mamadi Doumbouya said that he would fully resume work on national projects after this short break, before extending his best wishes to all Guineans.
