President Félix Tshisekedi hosted a celebratory reception at the People’s Palace on Sunday to honor the Democratic Republic of Congo’s national football team, the Leopards, following their historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The event marked a monumental achievement for the nation, ending a 52-year absence from the global tournament since their last appearance in 1974.
To recognize this feat, the Congolese head of state announced significant rewards for each player, including a new house and a vehicle. This gesture serves as a formal symbol of national gratitude for the team’s performance and the pride they have brought to the country.
The Leopards secured their spot in the finals through a hard-fought intercontinental playoff in Guadalajara, Mexico. A decisive 1-0 victory over Jamaica sealed their qualification, sparking nationwide celebrations and cementing the current squad’s place in Congolese sporting history.
