In a significant step to bolster the regional energy data ecosystem, the ECOWAS Commission, through its Energy and Mines Directorate, has provided substantial technical and financial support to the Liberian Ministry of Mines and Energy.
This collaboration has culminated in the establishment of the Liberia Energy Information System (Liberia-EIS).
The initiative included an intensive training course for Liberian national stakeholders, conducted in Monrovia from June 30 to July 3, 2025. The training adopted a practical, step-by-step approach, educating participants on the concepts and benefits of Energy Information Systems (EIS). Key areas covered included the identification of crucial data producers, the management and analysis of energy databases, and the implementation of indicators for electricity, petroleum products, biomass, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The program concluded on July 4, 2025, with the official launch of the Liberia Energy Information System (LEIS). The launch event saw the attendance of prominent officials, including Minister of Mines and Energy, Minister of Energy, Director of Energy and Mines at the ECOWAS Commission. and representatives from the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC), the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), and the National Oil and Gas Corporation of Liberia (NOCAL).
In his address, Minister Paye lauded the ECOWAS initiative, emphasizing that it addresses a critical need for data reliability within Liberia’s energy sector. He highlighted that the LEIS will be instrumental in developing evidence-based policies, facilitating strategic planning, and fostering transparency in the energy sector.
Mr. Bayaornibè Dabiré of the ECOWAS Commission reiterated the adage that “information is power, but only if it is shared, reliable and well used.” He urged national stakeholders to fully utilize this new tool to build a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable energy future for Liberia.
