The Egyptian government hailed on Tuesday, Washington’s decision to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a global terrorist organisation, adding it to the list of Specially Designated Terrorist Organizations (SDTOs).
In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cairo declared this a major step, revealing the dangerous nature of the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideology and the threat it poses to regional and international security.
The statement emphasised that the US announcement earlier on Wednesday highlighted the risks associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and its ideology, which Egypt considers a direct threat to public stability and security.
Egypt also commended the efforts of US President Donald Trump’s administration in combating international terrorism, noting that this designation is consistent with the country’s long-standing position regarding the movement, which is classified as a terrorist organisation due to its history of violence, extremism, and incitement
to hatred.
The ministry emphasises that Egypt, like several other states in the region, has suffered for decades from the actions of the Muslim Brotherhood, which it accuses of exploiting religion for political ends and resorting to acts of violence and terrorism targeting civilians, security forces, and state institutions, with the aim of destabilising the country.
The statement reaffirms that Cairo will continue to work with its regional and international partners to combat terrorism wherever it is manifested, with the objective of guaranteeing the security and stability of Egypt, the region, and globally.
