Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has fired longtime lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, APA can report from Abuja on Monday.
Lawyer Ejiofor who has been in charge of Mr Kanu’s affairs for many years, was formally told last week to stop acting on his behalf and cease all relations with the activist who still languishes in the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
Nnamdi Kanu was jailed by the Nigerian federal court after his conviction on seven counts of terrorism, treason, and leading an outlawed group.
Ejiofor will also cease to represent the interest of Kanu’s family and IPOB which has not hidden its pro-Biafra secessionist agenda.
Banned and targeted with political crackdowns, IPOB is seeking an independent state of Biafra.
Media reports say Kanu’s decision to sever professional ties with the lawyer was conveyed in a letter dated July 22, 2026.
Reports quoted the details of the letter as suggesting that Kanu had previously informed Ejiofor verbally that his services were no longer required.
“Your engagement as my personal legal representative was previously terminated by me through direct verbal communication, upon which you ceased acting in that capacity. This letter serves, in part, as a formal written confirmation of that earlier termination,” Kanu wrote.
Under the IPOB Code of Conduct, the authority to appoint, suspend or remove principal officers and representatives, rests solely with Mr. Kanu.
As Kanu’s decision comes into effect, Ejiofor is expected to stop issuing statements, granting interviews, or making social media posts on behalf of IPOB, its leader or his family.
Lawyer Ejiofor has not reacted.
