Disparate rebel movements active in different parts of Ethiopia say they have formed a new coalition with the stated aim of toppling the government in Addis Ababa, APA can report on Monday.
The seven rebel groups forming this unprecedented alliance are the Fano forces based in Amhara, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and four lesser-known movements.
Some of the movements are located in Ogaden, Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz.
They are collectively known as the Alliance for Survival and accuse the federal government led by Abiy Ahmed of committing genocide and going on a campaign of systematic destruction of Ethiopian lives.
The rebel alliance says it is out to arrest what it calls Ethiopia’s catastrophic slide into disintegration as a country facing perennial instability, grinding poverty of its citizens and ineffective leadership.
The government in Addis Ababa has not reacted to the new rebel alliance and its stated aim against it.
As Ethiopia’s two most populous states, Oromia and Amhara have faced the brunt of worsening conflict which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced over 3 million more.
The bloodiest was the war in Tigray which ended in 2022 but picked up again a few years later.
