The Constitutional Court in Gabon on Tuesday proclaimed the final results of the senatorial elections held on November 8 and 29, confirming the overwhelming dominance of the presidential party, the Democratic Union of Builders (UDB), the Gabonese Press Agency reported.
The definitive results, announced by Constitutional Court President Dieudonné Aba’a Owono, allocate 46 seats to the UDB, establishing it as a major force within the second chamber of Parliament. Despite two seats still to be filled in the departments of Okano (Mitzic) and Ndolou (Mandji), the new Senate configuration reveals a clear decline for the former majority’s Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), which secured five elected officials, and the National Union (UN), which won only two.
Electoral alliances—USD/PDG, UDB/PRC, PDG/UDB, and RPM/BDC—along with two independents, complete the political landscape.
This first legislature of the 5th Republic will face several major challenges: ensuring territorial equity, preventing the marginalization of sparsely populated areas, and strengthening the democratic legitimacy of officials elected via indirect suffrage.
Citizen expectations remain high, particularly concerning public services, transparency, administrative efficiency, and local governance. The new senators will also need to adapt to an institutional environment undergoing a complete reorganisation, demanding rigor, competence, and political will.
The Gabonese senatorial elections, held on November 8 and 29, fully renewed the second chamber as part of the 5th Republic’s inaugural legislature. The senators, elected by local councillors via indirect suffrage, are set to play a key role in institutional stabilisation and the consolidation of territorial governance.
