Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for a seven-story multi-purpose parking garage and retail complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport, as part of efforts to expand the airport’s capacity.
The future infrastructure at Accra International Airport will provide approximately 2,030 covered parking spaces, as well as retail, leisure, and hospitality areas, the Ghanaian presidency announced on Wednesday.
According to President Mahama, the government’s strategy is not only to attract more passengers but also to establish Ghana as a preferred destination, a convenient transit point, and a competitive air hub on the African continent.
The Ghanaian President emphasised that the airport’s passenger traffic is projected to increase from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, a growth, he says, justifies the infrastructure expansion.
He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening air infrastructure and connectivity, while calling for professionalism, discipline and courtesy throughout the sector.
He specified that several airport projects, including the new control tower for the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the renovation of Terminal 2, the connecting hall between Terminals 2 and 3, and the new parking and commercial complex, are being financed entirely from the GCAA’s and Ghana Airports Company Limited’s resources, without direct government funding.
