An official in Ghana has disclosed plans to rename the main airport to reflect the true nature of the country’s history and heritage, APA can report on Wednesday.
According to majority leader in the Ghanaian parliament Mahama Ayariga, a bill sanctioning the name-change is to be put before the House for approval.
The Kotoka International Airport was first known as Accra International Airport when it was officially opened in 1958.
Nine years later it was named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who was among senior military officers who deposed Ghana’s independence leader Kwame Nkrumah.
As a result of this, Kotoka’s name is synonymous with national infamy in the opinion of supporters of the late Nkrumah who is still seen as a top tier Pan Africanist not only in Ghana but across Africa where his call for African unity is a rallying cry.
The alternative name for the airport has not been revealed but many Ghanaians hope it will fittingly reflect their country’s national pride.
