Following an official diplomatic visit to Tripoli, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has reaffirmed the pan-African organization’s commitment to supporting Libya’s efforts toward national reconciliation, state institution unification, and sustainable peace.
During his visit, Youssouf engaged in high-level discussions with Presidential Council President Mohamed Younis al-Menfi, Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah, and acting Foreign Minister Taher al-Baour to address ongoing political developments, regional security, and Libya’s active participation in continental initiatives.
Youssouf emphasized the African Union’s staunch commitment to respecting Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while firmly opposing external interference. Advocating for a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political transition, the AU Chairperson praised existing achievements such as the Peace and Reconciliation Pact and the Declaration of Principles. He called on all national stakeholders to build upon these foundational agreements to unify governing bodies and lay the groundwork for upcoming national elections.
Marking a major milestone in bilateral relations, the visit featured the official reopening of the African Union liaison office in Tripoli alongside the inspection of a new national office for the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD. The reopened liaison presence is designed to streamline direct communication, facilitate consultations, and bolster Libya’s alignment with Agenda 2063 projects, particularly regarding counter-terrorism, governance, and regional development. Expressing gratitude to Tunisia for hosting temporary operations during the interim period, Youssouf reiterated the AU’s readiness to assist Libya in securing lasting political stability.
