Malian authorities launched the annual revision of the national voter register on October 1, initiating a three-month operational window supervised by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation alongside the Independent Electoral Management Authority.
Scheduled to run through December 31, 2026, the exercise enables newly eligible citizens to register, removes deceased or disqualified individuals, and processes address transfers across local municipal offices, diplomatic missions abroad, and the state’s online portal.
While mandated annually by Malian electoral law to update the permanent biometric civil registry, the current update proceeds in the absence of an established election timetable. Public balloting has remained stalled since the June 2023 constitutional referendum following the postponement of scheduled presidential polls, the dissolution of political parties, and a 2025 revision to the Transition Charter granting General Assimi Goïta a renewable five-year tenure as Head of State. Government officials emphasized that while the ongoing revision maintains the technical and institutional framework required for eventual elections, the operation serves strictly as a statutory administrative maintenance process rather than a formal convening of the electorate.
