President João Lourenço has been nominated unopposed for the presidency of Angola’s ruling MPLA, the party’s National Preparatory Commission announced on Tuesday.
The Sub‑Committee on Candidacies said since the opening of the nomination process on 28 March, it had received only Lourenço’s submission for the top party post.
The commission said the candidacy is now being processed in line with MPLA electoral regulations and the rules governing preparations for the party’s 9th Ordinary Congress, scheduled for 9–10 December 2026.
It added that any other matters related to the organisational process must be directed to the National Preparatory Commission or relevant party bodies.
The MPLA Central Committee formally convened the December congress in March, approving the event’s organisational framework, methodology and schedule.
The congress is expected to review party strategy, leadership structures and political direction as Angola prepares for future electoral cycles.
