Nominations for candidates contesting Zambia’s National Assembly and mayoral or council chairperson elections will run from Wednesday until Friday, the Electoral Commission of Zambia has announced.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the nomination period had been extended to accommodate aspiring candidates who lost their voter’s cards and risked being excluded from the process.
Kasaro said the commission had opened a special window for the replacement of lost voter’s cards for aspiring candidates only running from 20 to 23 May at ECZ headquarters in Lusaka.
“To facilitate inclusive participation in the electoral process, the commission has opened a special window for the replacement of lost voter’s cards for aspiring candidates only,” KASARO said in a statement.
Applicants must present a police report confirming the loss and proof of intention to stand for office.
Ward councillor nominations will proceed as originally scheduled on 21-22 May.
The nomination exercise comes as Zambia prepares for a high‑stakes general election that will choose a president, members of parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and ward councillors.
The ECZ has urged aspiring candidates to complete their documentation promptly to avoid disruptions.
