Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and partnering units discovered 54 bodies during a joint search-and-rescue mission at a settlement in Tagadayat, approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Ménaka, following recent insurgent violence against civilian populations in the country’s northeastern operational sector.
Military authorities confirmed that nine survivors were recovered from the scene and safely evacuated to Ménaka, where emergency assistance and administrative care were provided by local humanitarian and security services. According to preliminary testimony gathered by military officials from the survivors, the mass killings were carried out by militants affiliated with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), an armed group active along the tri-border region connecting Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
The updated military body count follows an initial report released on October 18, 2026, by the executive bureau of the Idaksahak community, which cited at least 48 civilian fatalities. The General Staff clarified that the 54 bodies uncovered during field searches represent the updated total count for the Tagadayat massacre rather than an additional figure. In response, armed forces have intensified defensive patrols throughout the Ménaka region to secure vulnerable settlements and facilitate the safe relocation of displaced residents.
