The Education and Careers Fair, which launched on May 14, 2026, in Bamako, represents a critical effort to align Mali’s educational pathways with the practical demands of the modern labor market.
Presided over by Issoufi Arbert Bedari Touré, the National Director of Fundamental Education, the event has transformed the exhibition park in Bamako’s 5th district into a dynamic hub for students, training institutions, and industry professionals. The fair serves as a vital platform for academic guidance and professional exchange, aiming to move beyond traditional field-of-study choices toward building career paths that directly respond to the country’s specific economic needs.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by Mali’s staggering demographic shifts, with a population approaching 25 million and a growth rate of 2.9% that places immense pressure on vocational training and job creation. While official unemployment figures appear low, they mask a fragile landscape where over 93% of the workforce is concentrated in the informal sector and 85% are self-employed. For the nation’s youth, the priority is no longer just finding any activity, but securing marketable qualifications and stable employment that offers genuine long-term advancement.
The challenge of professional integration is further complicated by high dropout rates and a significant portion of the youth population—nearly 27%—who are not currently in education, employment, or training. Compounding these systemic issues is a severe security crisis that, as of mid-2025, had rendered over 2,000 schools non-functional, displacing hundreds of thousands of students and thousands of teachers. In this volatile environment, the fair’s organizers hope that the presence of 200 exhibitors and dozens of conferences will create the necessary bridges between schools and businesses. The ultimate goal is to translate these discussions into concrete opportunities, ensuring that young Malians have access to reliable information and are funneled into the most promising and resilient sectors of the economy.
